Redwoods National Park

After leaving Monterey, we traveled up the coast for a few days to Redwoods National Park near the border with Oregon.  It was a beautiful drive through lush, green valleys and tree-covered mountains.  As we neared the edges of the national park, we noticed that the trees were becoming exceptionally tall.  It felt like we were driving through a tree tunnel.  Then, every now and then, we started seeing trees that were four or five times the diameter of normal trees.  Nathan and I would look at each other and say, "Did you just see that?!!"

We were able to stay in a campground in the national park amongst trees so big it felt like you were in a rainforest because it was so shaded on the ground.  It was beautiful and peaceful and awe-inspiring.  In spite of the rain, we did some hiking through the oldest part of the forest with trees up to 20 feet in diameter and over 300 feet tall.  We felt so small!  Our favorite comment from the kids was when John said, "These trees are so big we only need like one of them for our campfire!"  Also, while we were there, we celebrated Nathan's birthday with a campfire, some good root beer, and smores.  Happy birthday, Nathan!

"Mommy, it's cold out here!"
